Stew
Stew Lane in the City of London, is between Southwark and Cannon Street Bridges. Rather than being named after a delicious casserole-style dish, Stew Lane is named after brothels or ‘stews’ that would have been on the site between the 12th and 17th centuries. Most brothels at this time were on the south bank of the river and owned by the Bishops of Winchester, so Stew Lane could have been an embarking point for boats heading from the north side to Southwark.
Stew
A stew is a combination of solid food ingredients that have been cooked in liquid and served in the resultant gravy. Ingredients can include any combination of vegetables and may include meat, especially tougher meats suitable for slow-cooking, such as beef, pork, venison, rabbit, lamb, poultry, sausages, and seafood.
