Drum

When I took this photo in about 2008, Drum Street in Whitechapel was the only instance of this fish on London’s street signs. Since then, however, the street has been demolished to make way for the redevelopment of the area opposite Aldgate East Station. A pedestrian pathway named New Drum Street is now on approximately the same site.

Drum

A freshwater fish, the drum is so named because of the ‘croaking’ sound the male fish can make. For culinary purposes, drum can be treated like redfish – such as snappers – with the fillets grilled or fried.
