Ham

Ham Yard was the yard behind a 17th century pub called ‘The Ham’. There are five other Streats named Ham including Ham Close, Ham Fields, Ham Street and Ham View, but then in Old English, Ham means ‘home,’ ‘homestead’, or ‘village’, referring to a settlement or a substantial farm, so these are less likely to be about meat than Ham Yard. There is, of course, a district called Ham in south-west London where the historic Ham House & Gardens is worth visiting.

Ham

Ham is pork from a leg cut that has been preserved by wet or dry curing, with or without smoking. Ham is typically used in its sliced form, often as a filling for sandwiches and similar foods. Cooked ham joints are a popular dish around Christmas time, particularly in Northern Europe.
