Street sign reading 'Dace Road E.3' on a brick wall, with the Borough of Waltham Forest emblem.

Dace

The only instance of this fish on London’s street signs, Dace Road is in East London, near Hackney Wick. In 1865 a small factory town was built in the area with several roads given the names of freshwater fish (Dace, Bream, Roach). As the local area had been known to residents as “the Island”, it eventually became known as Fish Island.

A whole dead fish, likely a freshwater fish, with silver scales, a darker back, and orange-tinted fins, lying on a plain white background.

Dace

Dace refers to both a European fish and the Chinese mud carp, which is a common food fish in Chinese cuisine. The European common dace is not highly regarded as a food fish in the UK.
