Roach
The only instance of this fish on London’s street signs, Roach Road is in East London, near Hackney Wick. In 1865 a small factory town was built in the area with several roads given the names of freshwater fish (Dace, Bream, Roach). As the local area had been known to residents as “the Island”, it eventually became known as Fish Island.

A freshwater fish, the roach is rarely used in cooking, however, is considered quite tasty and be cooked in a variety of ways including pan-frying, grilling, baking and poaching.
